Kent Premier League

Lordswood  3   Beckenham Town  2

Lordswood’s erratic form continued today as they beat potential League Champions Beckenham Town with a superb battling performance with all the players deserving credit especially as they went a goal down.

This performance was 100 times better than Tuesday night’s and straight away a chance came when in the 1st minute Mike McKenna controlled the ball and laid it back into the path of Alan Backshall whose shot from 20 yards was saved by the keeper, Beckenham replied straight away when Jones Awuah crossed to the far post for Danny Harris whose volleyed shot flashed across the goal. Lordswood should have taken the lead in the 11th minute when Sean Hetterley on the left crossed to the back post where Dave Forster was on his own saw his header go wide, in the very next minute a ball up to Mike McKenna who controlled and passed it back to Alan Backshall whose 20 yard shot forced Chris Lewington to push the ball over the bar. Another long ball forward to McKenna in the 21st minute saw him lay the ball into the path of Adam Ling who from the edge of the area saw his shot saved by the keeper.

In the 25th minute Beckenham took the lead against the run of play when Awuah latched onto a through ball and went into area and round Gavin and slotted it into the empty net. How would Lordswood react to this setback, three minutes later came the answer when Sean on the left made a cross field pass to David English who controlled it and floated the ball into the area where this time Dave Forster made no mistake and headed in. Two minutes later Lordswood were awarded a penalty when Andy Mills threaded the ball forward for Sean to run onto but he was fouled in the area and up stepped Aaron Burrett to hit the penalty into the bottom left hand corner. It could have been worse when the keeper Lewington took a quick goal kick straight at Adam Ling who went into the area and lobbed him only to see it come back of the crossbar into the arms of Lewington. Beckenham were still in this game just and in the 39th minute a free kick into the area saw Tony Sinclair rise and head goal wards only for Gavin to tip over the bar and from the resulting corner the ball went straight under the bar and ended up in the net but Gavin was fouled.

The second half started slowly as Lordswood came out and played in the same way as the first stopping Beckenham play but in the 65th minute Ted Hart 35 yards out saw his shot pushed around the post by Gavin. In the 70th minute Beckenham were down to ten men when Danny Harris was sent off for foul and abusive language, this helped Lordswood as in the 75th minute Alan Backshall controlled the ball and released Sean down the right and he scampered past the defender went to the by-line and crossed low to the back post where Mike McKenna was and he stabbed home for his first for the club since signing from Gravesend and Northfleet. As most people know when a team goes down to ten they seem to galvanise themselves and cause more problems and this is what Beckenham did and in the 79th minute Ashley Carew received the ball 25 yards out on the left hand side of the penalty area and his curling shot beat Gavin.

The last ten minutes were hectic with Beckenham throwing everything at Lordswood but only once did they nearly get the equaliser when a corner to the back post headed goal bound but Sean Hetterley headed it of the line. The final whistle went and all the Lordswood players knew they had been in a battle but deservedly came out on top.
