F.A.Vase 2nd Qualifying Round

23rd September 2006
Lordswood  2   Cobham FC  3 a.e.t.

Lordswood’s season continues to mystify everyone at the club as today they had it won, then a replay and then in the dying moments lose.

Cobham came to Martyn Grove wearing the colours of Chelsea a team that trains five minutes away from their ground and they gave them a kit to use and in the 5th minute they nearly took the lead when Aaron Burrett’s pass went straight to Mark Knight who from halfway ran forward into the area but instead of shooting he carried on and got crowded out in the very next minute Lordswood could have scored when Mike McKenna put Sean Hetterley down the right and he cut inside and passed to Alan Backshall who checked and from 15 yards shot but it went over the bar. In the 17th minute Alan on the left received the ball beat the defender crossed low for Mike McKenna who controlled it and shot home from 6 yards. Three minutes later it could have been two when Adam Overton’s corner over the keeper and Dave Forster saw his header come back of the bar to Ashley Russell who from 10 yards blazed his shot over. Another chance went a begging in the 22nd minute when Adam’s free kick into the area was met by Andy Forster’s head but it went wide. At this stage Lordswood were in control but just could not get the second goal as chances were being spurned as in the 35th minute when Mike McKenna on the right crossed to the back post where Adam and Alan combined leaving Alan time to shoot from 20 yards but again it blazed over.

The second half was only seconds old when Cobham against the run of play equalised when a hopeful ball forward saw Ollie Wayne run through beating the offside trap and once in the area went round Gavin and slotted into the empty net. It’s amazing what a goal does for confidence as Cobham came out of their shell and started to compete. Lordswood despite this setback were still creating chances and in the 51st minute a corner to the backpost was headed back by Dave Forster for Sean Hetterley but his header from 8 yards went wide. In the very next minute Andy Forster in the middle of the park went forward and his shot from 25 yards was saved at the 2nd attempt by Jay Gilder. In the 56th minute Wayne and Knight combined for Knight to shoot but Gavin saved it. Mike McKenna nearly produced a wonder goal in the 58th minute when he received the ball on the edge of the area and turned quickly taking 2 defenders out and his shot from 12 yards was saved by the keeper’s legs. Cobham came back in the very next minute and nearly took the lead when Tom Davis’s corner was met by Nick Tooley’s head going goalwards but Sean Hetterley on the post cleared. In the 60th minute a delightful piece of football by Lordswood saw them nearly take the lead when Ashley Russell passed to Adam Overton who passed forward for Ashley who passed to Alan who turned and shot in the same movement but unfortunately the keeper saved it. The rest of the half saw both sides tire a bit and eventually the full time whistle went.

Extra time started with both teams looking tired but in the 103rd minute Adam Overton running forward passed inside to Dave Forster who threaded the ball through for Mike McKenna and he collected the ball and went round the keeper and slotted home, joy for Lordswood, half time arrived and everything looked good for Lordswood. The second half started with Dave Forster collecting a half clearance and his shot went just over the bar, at this time Lordswood looked the only winners and in the 110th minute Adam Ling crossed to the back post for Dave Forster whose header went back across goal causing a scramble but eventually cleared. Disaster struck in the 114th minute when a hopeful cross-evaded everyone accept Daniel Cox on the far post and he headed into an empty net. Two minutes later the knockout blow came when the ball knocked forward into the area saw Knight latch onto it and slot the ball past Gavin. The very next minute Knight saw his shot from 20 yards hit the crossbar. The final whistle went and Lordswood came off wondering how they lost this game.
