Kent Senior Trophy 1st Round
16th October 2007
Lordswood 3 Erith and Belvedere 1
Lordswood battled into the second round with a battling performance with ten men for over 73 minutes but deservedly won as Erith ran out
of ideas and a suburb substitution saw Martin Difede become a hero. The game started at a frantic pace with Erith showing the way but it was Lordswood who
had the first real chance when a cross into the near post saw Lee Farrell ghost in but head just wide and then in the 11th minute a Lewis Taylor free kick
into the area was missed by their keeper and Lee Skinner behind him headed over the bar. Erith and Belvedere’s first chance came in the 13th minute when a
corner to the back post saw Paul Gross head wide. Another chance came in the 27th minute when Rowen Arnott’s free kick went right through to Jamie Taylor
who from an acute angle saw his snap shot go wide and then cheer for Lordswood as they took the lead when a Lewis Taylor corner into the area was half
cleared to Lee Martin 10 yards out and controlled and drilled his shot through a crowd of players into the net.
The second half was only two minutes old when disaster struck Lordswood as Lee Martin went from hero to zero when he committed a bad foul
and was sent off again Lordswood had to reorganise. Erith were now in control of possession but not causing any problems but in the 67th minute Mark
Nougher on the edge of the area saw his shot saved by Rowen but a minute later the equaliser came when Nick Smith an old Lordswood boy got to the by-line
crossed to the back post where Paul Gross was and he headed home. Erith tried to stretch Lordswood with their one man advantage but Lordswood ran their
hearts out covering every blade of grass covering the pitch but in the 84th minute they got a bit of luck when the ball on the edge of the area was shot at
goal but went straight to Steve White who from 6 yards out side footed wide with no one near him. The final whistle went and extra time.
Extra time started with Erith looking the likely team to score but they did not realise what they were up against as Lordswood somehow
continued to block and tackle when needed and thus avoided Rowen having to do much, at half time Lee Farrell who had run his heart out as the lone striker
was replaced by Martin Difede and in the 113th minute Lordswood unexpectedly took the lead when a long ball forward by Rowen saw it come back to Scott
Bucklen who passed to Jamie Taylor who threaded the ball to Martin and he ran into the area and slotted the ball home, then with time running out for
Erith they got caught again when Alec Osborne on the right picked up a clearance on the right wing and his cross into the area saw Martin Difede jump
like a salmon to head home from 8 yards.
