Kent Premier League

25th August 2007
Greenwich Borough 1   Lordswood 0

This is a game that Lordswood should have taken something from against a Greenwich Borough side that is riding high in the league. But it was not to be despite some near misses the old story of missed chances was on the lips of the Lordswood supporters as they made their way home.

After successfully negotiating the hoodoo first 5 minutes Lordswood were competing well and the home defence had to be on guard as Lee Farrell raced through chasing some long clearances by the Lords defence. The first real chance fell to Greenwich in the 8th minute as Joseph Ogoo rounded Adrian Bagshaw to cross to the back post; Stefan Wilcock making his debut for Lords palmed the ball away and was thankful to see Greenwich’s Huseyin Budak blast the ball high and wide. Then once again Lordswood paid the penalty of being caught in possession in the middle of our own half. On 14 minutes Danny Malone was caught napping and Duanne Moncrieff raced through despite calls for offside to slip the ball past Stefan and into the right hand corner of the net.

Lords hit back immediately and in 19 minutes a free kick taken by Adam Douglas saw debutant Rob Owen head goal bound but weakly at the Greenwich goal. This encouraged the whole team and saw Lordswood have several good chances but all went begging. None better than on 22 minutes when Lee Martin pushed the ball past the advancing Greenwich keeper Michael Holder only to see the ball cleared off the line by two defenders as Lee Farrell tried to force the ball home

This spurred the Greenwich forwards into action and on 39 minutes Harbinigi Grant hit the post when it was easier to score after some poor defending by the Lords defence. In extra time of the first half Lordswood should have equalised when following great work and cross by Matt McHugh, the ball found the head of Craig Beckwith but his powerful header skimmed inches over the home side goal cross bar.

The second half started with David Abe substituting for Lee Farrell but the game became scrappy with the battle to win midfield taking no prisoners. On 65 minutes Greenwich’s Harbinigi Grant received a 2nd yellow card for a late tackle and was sent from the field. The extra man improved Lordswood percentage of possession and despite increased pressure on the home defence in which Greenwich defender John Samuel was superb no break through came. In 71st minutes Matt McHugh narrowly missed following good exchanges of passes and lay off between Lewis Taylor and David Abe. On 80 minutes Adam Douglas was replaced by Alec Osborne. The next minute Lee Martin was put through on goal following a great flick on header by David Abe but whilst well struck the ball failed to find the back of the net. Despite some half chances Lords did not force the Greenwich keeper to make any more saves and the game fizzled out leaving Lordswood to look back and rue their missed chances. This is still a young Lordswood side and so they should take heart from the display and a league win will surely come.
