Kent Premier League
16th December 2006
Greenwich Borough 3 Lordswood 2
Lordswood’s recent run came to halt in dramatic fashion when Greenwich scored the winner in the 88th minute but to everyone in the ground
could see it was offside except the officials who were not the best today.
The game started 52 minutes late due to one official not turning up and the replacement taking time to arrive to both sets of players were
left to hang around. Greenwich could have taken the lead in the 1st minute when a long ball forward saw Dave Hassett running after it but Gavin coming off
his line got to it but it rebounded out to Jason Ward whose shot from 18 yards came back off the crossbar. They did take the lead when Chris Hubbard on the
left wing cut inside and was fouled in the area by Aaron Burrett a penalty was awarded and up stepped Meshach Nugent who shot low into the left hand
corner.
In the 18th minute Lordswood equalised when Sean Hetterley went on a mazy run from wide on the right into the area and he was fouled and a
penalty awarded, up stepped Nick Smith to smack it straight down the middle. In a see saw game Greenwich came back and in the 25th minute a corner into
the area found Dave Waters and his bullet header was saved by Gavin, another chance for Greenwich came in the 33rd minute when George Jones crossed to the
back post and Nugent’s header went just past the near post with Gavin beaten.
The second half was only seven minutes old when Steve Sharp released the ball into the right hand channel for Nick Smith to run on to and
he collected it ran into area beating one defender before shooting past the keeper. Greenwich seemed to be shocked by this and you could not see them,
getting a goal then the controversy came when in the 67th minute Hubbard on the left was allowed to run forward and Aaron Burrett came across and fouled
him but the Referee gave a penalty when most observers near the incident said it was outside the area, anyway up stepped Nugent again and he hit it low
into the left hand corner of the net. Two minutes later it could have been three when a corner in saw Nugent’s powerful header cleared off the line by
Andy Mills. Lordswood were now holding on to a point but were letting Greenwich come forward and in the last fifteen minutes they had a few chances but
great defending and poor finishing enabled Lordswood to hang on but in the 88th minute Hubbard on the left crossed low and it was cleared off the line but
came out to Ben Yiadom whose shot caused a scramble to occur and eventually it seemed like two Greenwich Players standing two feet from the line in an
offside position and one of them Harbingi Grant stabbed home. The controversy on this decision was that the Referee said he thought it was offside but as
the Assistant had not given it he let the goal stand.
