Lordswood 1   Herne Bay 2

Lordswood’s inconsistency came back to haunt them as they lost to Herne Bay with an insipid performance at the back which seemed to allow Herne Bay to try and score at leisure. The game took a while to get going as both sides looked out of sorts which showed in an even first half, but in the 14th minute a short corner to Martin Chandler on the edge of the area saw him control and volley goal wards but Rowan was able to push it over the bar, four minutes later Lordswood had their first half chance when the ball in the area was only cleared to Adam Douglas on the edge of the area and his shot went just past the post. In the 22nd minute Darren Marsden playing against his former club saw his free kick from 25 yards deflected for a corner. In the very next a Lewis Taylor went into the area and the ball was half cleared to Adam Douglas who chested down and his chip from 20 yards hit the top the netting. In the very next minute Herne Bay thought they had got the breakthrough when Luke Harvey challenged Danny Malone in the area and he got his shot away beating Rowan but not the post. This was the last piece of real action of the half as both sides had possession but gave it away easily.

Lordswood came out for the second half with a flea in their ear and in the 51st minute created the first chance of the half when Darren Marsden running forward from midfield passed into space for Lee Farrell and Scott Bucklen to chase and Scott got their first but his shot weak allowing Jack Delo to save. In the 56th minute Lewis Taylor saw his cross get half cleared to Darren Marsden on the edge of the area and his shot went just past the post. In the 59th minute Herne Bay had their first chance when Simon Brown put Luke Harvey in on goal and his shot was saved by Rowan’s legs for a corner and from the resultant corner Herne Bay took the lead when the corner to the back post was missed by Rowan and Shaun Bremner had room to hook in. Lordswood got back into the game two minutes later when a Lewis Taylor throw went to Douglas whose chip into the area found Scott Bucklen and his looped header beat the keeper. Herne Bay came back and in the 68th minute they nearly took the lead when Ben Brown running forward from halfway was half tackled by Danny Malone and the ball ended up at Harvey’s feet and his shot went just past the post but in the 73rd minute a comedy of errors occurred as Herne Bay did take the lead when a shot at goal was stabbed clear by Danny Malone when it seemed that Rowan had it covered and it came to Harvey eight yards out and his shot hit the ground and went over the despairing dive of Rowan. Three minutes later Harvey who was the thorn in the Lordswood defence went forward and his shot from 25 yards went just over the bar.

It was now all Herne Bay and in the 77th minute a free kick into the area saw Harvey on the angle force Rowan to concede a corner. Herne Bay up to full time were now causing problems all the time when the ball was in the area and how they never scored they will never know but in the 89th minute with Lordswood throwing everything at Herne Bay they nearly forced an equaliser when Ben Ashdown’s long throw into the area saw Shane Brown’s flicked header tipped over the bar by the keeper and from the resulting corner Darren Marsden from 8 yards saw his header go wide of the post. The final whistle went and last weeks performance was a memory as Herne Bay won the game deservedly.
