Kent Premier League
22nd December 2007
Hythe Town 3 Lordswood 0
Lordswood came away from Reachfields disappointed after three major decisions went against them and this after they showed some good form
especially as they were missing three key players.
The first major incident happened in the 7th minute when Hythe got a free kick 20 yards out and as Lordswood were sorting the wall out Lee
Winfield stepped up and curled the ball into an empty net with the Lordswood expecting the whistle to go to take it again but the Referee awarded it but
after that he did not let either side take a free kick early. In the 17th minute Winfield had another free kick on the edge of the area but this time it
curled past the post. In the 18th minute Smissen running forward saw his intended pass into the area rebound away but to Ian Hayes and his shot unopposed
from 15 yards sailed over the bar. Lordswood suddenly got into the game and in the 24th minute Craig Beckwith received the ball turned and went forward and
his shot from 25 yards forced Paul Hyde to push it around the post and from the resulting corner by Lewis Taylor, Adam Douglas rose and his header went
just wide. In the 37th minute another chance came Lordswood’s way when a free kick wide on the right saw Lewis Taylor chip into the area for Douglas whose
looping header went just over the bar.
The second half started with Lordswood on the ascendancy with Hythe relying on breakaways, Lordswood were having a lot of possession but at
the time were not getting anywhere and in the 53rd minute a Hythe breakaway saw a ball into the area half cleared to Jason Brazier whose shot from 20 yards
hit the post. In the 64th minute a free kick into the area saw Smissen chest it down but from 5 yards he shot over the bar. Four minutes later Martin
Defide’s cross field pass to Adrian Bagshaw in the area but his shot hit the side netting then in the 74th minute the second major decision arrived when a
ball into the area was cleared by the Lordswood defence only to see it knocked back in and Dave Cook 15 yards out but looking 5 yards offside volleyed in
but again the goal was given and then the most outrageous decision came when a ball into the area saw Ben Ashdown slip as he was about to clear but he was
able to head it away but the Referee deemed he had handled it and gave a penalty and to rub salt into the wound he booked Ben, up stepped Winfield who
planted the ball into the bottom left hand corner. One more chance came in the 88th minute when a corner into the area saw Winfield’s header tipped over
the bar by Rowen. The final whistle went and the Lordswood players came off bemused by some of the referee’s decisions but in reality they had lost to the better team but they still gave a good account of themselves.
