F.A Cup Extra Preliminary Round

1st September 2007
Selsey FC  1   Lordswood  0

Lordswood’s dreams in the FA Cup were ended in disappointing fashion as they lost by one goal. The game was only two minutes old when a defensive mistake allowed Clinton Moore space twenty yards out and his shot went just wide maybe this could be an omen another chance went Selsey’s way in the 11th minute when Ross Woolf on the right crossed to the back post where Moore rose but headed just wide. Lordswood had their first chance in the 17th minute when David Abe robbed the defender on the left wing ran forward and saw his shot blocked but it came to Alec Osborne whose first shot hit Alan Backshell on the back but came back to him but his second shot blazed over the bar. Another chance for Selsey came in the 21st minute when Rob Brown overlapping on the right crossed into the area where Moore controlled and shot but it went high and wide. In the 28th minute Selsey took the lead when Moore 25 yards out passed out to Rob Brown who from 15 yards on his own blasted the ball past Stefan Wilcock. The rest of the half petered out and when the half time whistle went we wondered if Shawn’s magic talk would revitalise the team.

The second half started with both teams committed but without creating any chances but with a one nil scoreline anything could happen. The first real chance came in the 65th minute when Moore capitalised on a defensive mistake and saw his chipped shot go just over the bar. Lordswood were now entering the last quarter of the game but did not seem to have any momentum and instead of throwing everything at Selsey seemed to carry on at a normal pace but In the 76th minute Shawn Mitchell bought himself on to try and inject some passion into their game and they had two chances to equalise when first in the 84th minute a ball into the area was flicked on by Shawn for David Abe to jump with the keeper Lee Arnell and as the ball came loose David stabbed home but as in 99% of times the keeper got a free kick then in the last minutes of the game a cross came over and Danny Malone’s flicked shot went agonisingly wide. The full time whistle went and the dream had vanished in a whimper as they knew they had not played well but confidence is still high even though they lost, if you were on the coach home you would have thought they had won.
