Kent Premier League Cup Group A

7th October 2006
Slade Green  1   Lordswood  1

Last month Lordswood lost 4-0 to Slade Green but today they came out with more purpose and confidence and were unlucky not to win but scoring with the virtually the last kick of the game they will take the draw.

Lordswood started very slowly as they could still have the memory of last month’s beating and Slade Green could sense this and in the 12th minute they should have taken the lead when Dave Forster’s back pass went straight to Jordan Assender who went into the area and his shot was half saved by Gavin Hopper and then hacked away by Ashley Russell to safety but in the 18th minute they did take the lead when a ball forward saw Ashley Russell back flick the ball to Gavin who called for it but John Paul McKey latched onto it and lobbed Gavin. This must have been the wake up call Lordswood needed as in the 22nd minute Warren Phillips on the right crossed to the back post where Adam Ling was and his volley from 10 yards went just over the bar and three minutes later a Lordswood corner by Adam Ling was knocked back to him and his cross into the area was half cleared to Aaron Burrett who shot from 20 yards forced John Paul Green to save.

The second half started with Lordswood on the front foot and in the 48th minute Adam Ling crossed to the back post where Warren Phillips appeared and his header hit the post came back across the area where Adam Overton was but his header went wide. Three minutes later Adam Ling’s corner into the area saw Andy Forster’s header pushed around the post by Green. Lordswood were now in control with Slade Green relying on breakaways. In the 74th minute it should have been 1-1 when an Andy Mills free kick from the right into the area found Mike McKenna on his own but his header went past the near post when scoring looked easier. In the 80th minute Slade Green’s Assender was put through and he went into the area and his shot was saved at the second attempt by Gavin and Slade Green had a couple of penalty appeals turned down by the Referee in the 82nd and 85th minute.

Lordswood were still searching for the equaliser and deep into injury time it finally happened when a cross to the back post saw McKenna’s header goal wards headed of the line by Paul Gross for a corner and from the resulting corner everyone was forward including Gavin and Gavin nearly got his head to it but it was cleared to Andy Forster 23 yards out and his shot went through the crowd of players into the back of the net. Slade Green were gutted and annoyed about the amount of injury time the Referee played but Lordswood were not worried about that and in the end fully deserved the point for their second half performance and could count themselves unlucky not to take all three points.
