Kent Senior Trophy 2nd Round
24th November 2007
Lordswood 0 Thamesmead Town 1
Lordswood came into today’s game as underdogs but in recent weeks had been playing well without reward and three weeks ago they met
Thamesmead at Thamesmead and came away with a 4-0 defeat although most people there would say it was an injustice of a score line but today was different as
they pushed their opponents all the way.
Lordswood came out of the dressing rooms the quickest and in the 3rd minute should have taken the lead when Darren Marsden passed to Mark
Vernon In the area and from 8 yards his shot was parried away by Lawrence Wright but only to Scot Bucklen whose shot beat Wright but not the post. In the
12th minute James Lyons making his debut received the ball on the edge of the area and then threaded the ball outside for Adrian Bagshaw whose cross shot
was cleared for a corner. Two minutes later a corner from Lewis Taylor to the back post was met by Mark Vernon whose shot was blocked and a scramble
occurred before Darren Marsden saw his shot from 20 yards saved by the Keeper. In the 21st minute a Thamesmead free kick into the area saw a bullet header
go towards goal forcing Rowen to push the ball away. In the 32nd minute Richard Dimmock chipped forward for Rikki Cable who beat Lewis and shot but Rowen
saved it. In the very next minute Lordswood broke away and Mark Vernon received the ball on the left and went across the pitch before shooting but it was
deflected for a corner. Then the sting in the tail as James Brown running from halfway inside his own half ran down the left wing beating Lewis Taylor and
Adam Douglas and went into the area and curled his shot round Rowen into the net.
The second half started slowly as both sides tightened up their defences but still good football was being played and in the 70th minute
Wright’s bad goal kick went straight to Mark Vernon 25 yards out and he controlled it and volleyed towards the goal with Wright beaten but it hit the top
of the net then Thamesmead got in on the act as a free kick 25 yards out was taken by Dimmock whose shot went just over the bar then a minute later Dimmock
put Brown in on goal and from 20 yards his shot was pushed over the bar by Rowen for a corner and from the corner Brown on the far post headed just over.
In the 79th minute Martin Difede received the ball on the edge of the area turned and saw his shot go over the bar via a great save by Wright then in the
83rd minute James Lyons making his Lordswood debut back flicked into the path of Mark Vernon who played a one-two with Martin Difede and his shot from 8
yards under pressure was saved by the keeper. Three minutes from time Thamesmead should have eased their nerves when Curtis Williams took the ball off
Lewis Taylor ran into the area and was just about to shoot past the advancing Rowen when Lewis got back and tackled him and Rowen was able to pick it up.
The last moments of the game saw Lordswood throw everything at Thamesmead including having three corners in succession and the last one was half cleared to
Adam Douglas who from 20 yards hit a pile blaster but it was headed out by a defender who probably had a headache after that, the final whistle went and
Lordswood can count themselves unlucky that firstly they did not force extra time and maybe get a win.
