Kent Premier League
24th February 2007
Thamesmead Town 3 Lordswood 1
Lordswood had been inactive for two weeks and to come and play Thamesmead away could have been a daunting fixture but although the result
looks bad they adapted to the conditions well and made Thamesmead look like a middle of the table team.
The game started very slowly with both teams getting used to the heavy pitch but in the 13th minute a free kick into the area was half
cleared by the Thamesmead defence but only to Gary East running forward and his shot from 20 yards was deflected just past the post for a corner. Two
minutes later another chance came Lordswood’s way when Stuart Harrison’s free kick into the area saw Dave Forster rise and his glancing header just went
past the post. Thamesmead’s first real chance came in the 22nd minute when Curtis Williams crossed into the area where Gavin came out to punch it clear but
Rikki Cable beat him but header hit the top of the netting. Three minutes a flowing move down the left by Thamesmead saw Williams and Cable combine and
Williams in the area saw his shot beat Gavin but not Ashley Russell who headed it off he line. Thamesmead took the lead in the 38th minute when Rikki
Cable’s shot was parried away by Gavin but Williams pounced on it and scored from an acute angle. Lordswood replied three minutes later when the best
move of the match saw the ball move out of defence to Mark Chiverton making his debut on halfway and he clipped it to Clint Gooding on the right wing who
went forward and passed to Nick Smith on the edge of the area and he passed inside to Clint who then laid it for Andy Forster who controlled it and shot
home from 18 yards beating the keeper easily. Thamesmead came back pretty quickly and in the 43rd minute Sam Thomas in the area saw his shot saved by Gavin
but a minute later they went ahead again when a free kick just inside their own half was clipped forward and the Lordswood defence let it go thinking that
Rikki Cable was offside but no flag went up and he shot home from 20 yards.
The second half saw Thamesmead have loads of possession but not creating many chances and Lordswood did not create any real chances
although they caused a few anxieties in the Thamesmead defence. In the 59th minute Williams raced clear and went into the area where Gavin had raced off
his line and Williams flicked it over Gavin but it went wide. The Lordswood defence were superb and everyone of them blocked and tackled when needed and
the Thamesmead Boss must have been getting frustrated as his team could not get that killer third goal to kill the game, with minutes remaining and
Lordswood pressing forward it was likely that Thamesmead would get that third and in the 93rd minute Thomas on the left got to the by-line and his low
cross came to Ross Cable who controlled it and drilled home from 6 yards. The final whistle went and you could see the relief on the Thamesmead players and
Management and the disappointment of the Lordswood players and Management.
