Kent Premier League

11th November 2006
Lordswood  1   Thamesmead Town  2

High flying Thamesmead Town came to Martyn Grove full of confidence knowing that Lordswood form of late has been indifferent at best. However , their performance was not that of league leaders as they struggled to overcome a battling Lordswood side. Apart from a early chance in the 6th minute when a header by Thamesmead’s Ricki Cable was parried by Gavin Hopper and kicked off the line by Ashley Russell there were few clear cut chances until the 40th minute when Dean Kearley latched on a knock down to fire Thamesmead ahead. Until this point Lordswood were happy to hit Thamesmead on the break as the league leaders dominated possession of the ball.

This spurred Lordswood to attack and push Thamesmead back into their own half. A typical Dave Forster tackle in midfield won the ball and his pass to Nick Smith down the right enabled the forward to cut into the penalty area and see his cross-shot handled by a Thamesmead defender who had slipped trying to turn quickly. The protests of the away side were dismissed by referee and resulted in Thamesmead’s Tony Gallagher seeing a yellow card. Up stepped Steve Sharpe to rifle home an equaliser as goalkeeper Sam Mills dived the wrong way. Thamesmead’s response was to force Lordswood back but with no success as the half time whistle blew.

The 2nd half saw Thamesmead pick up where they left off forcing the game to Lordswood. Positive play resulted in the Lords goal being pressured and at time some desperate defending was needed. A succession of corners by Thamesmead caused panic in the home defence as they failed to deal effectively with the aerial threat posed by the big Thamesmead defenders who came up looking to win the game. In the 62nd min Thamesmead’s pushed the ball down the right and passed it inside to Curtis Williams who’s effort was pushed on to the post and cleared by Ashley Russell. Gavin Hopper was by far the busier of the two keepers. Undaunted Lordswood tried valiantly to get something out of the game, Adam Ling was here there and every where as he tried to spark some life into the Lords forward line.

On 67 mins Gary East replaced Ray Broad in an attempt to take the game to Thamesmead. However 2 mins later disaster struck as Ricki Cable picked up on a mistake at the back by the Lordswood defence to coolly slot home. Thamesmead followed this up with a period of sustained pressure with corner after corner but with no success.

With nothing to lose John Gissing was brought on in 82 mins to save the game. Immediately Lords seemed to pick themselves up and force Thamesmead to do some defending of their own. The late rally best chance fell to Adam Ling as his goal bound shot was blocked 6 yards from the goal line. This was the last real effort of the game as Thamesmead comfortably saw out the last few minutes with no further scares.
