Kent Premier League Cup Group A

30th November 2006
VCD Athletic  3   Lordswood  1

Lordswood’s faint chance of qualifying for the quarterfinals disappeared at Oakwood but they put up a better performance than Saturdays debarckle.

Lordswood came out off the traps quickly and for the first 17 minutes looked the better side but as we know goals change games and in the 18th minute VCD took the lead when a corner was cleared but a VCD player collected it and crossed for Ashley Probets 20 yards out and he was not closed down and his shot beat Gavin. It could have been two when in the 20th minute Stuart Abbott received the ball and saw his shot parried away by Gavin. Lordswood should have equalised in the 27th minute when Aaron Burrett on a breakaway ran forward towards goal and then passed to Nick Smith on the left in the area and his curling shot was half saved by the keeper and came out to Ray Broad on the edge of the area and his shot was deflected for a corner.

VCD went two up in the 36th minute when Ramirex in the area twisting and turning was brought down by Warren and a penalty was given, up stepped Probets and he smashed the ball into the top right hand corner. In the 43rd minute Adam Ling combined with Gary East on the right wing and continued his run into the area where he was fouled although he was able to get the ball to Nick Smith who from 6 yards shot wide but the Referee pointed to the spot and gave a penalty. Aaron Burrett stepped and from 2 paces saw his effort parried away by the keeper, but a minute later Lordswood did score when Mike McKenna flicked the ball on to Gary East who ran into the area and shot past the advancing keeper.

VCD nearly increased their lead in the 51st minute when Abbott in the area turned and twisted but his shot was parried away by Gavin but in the 53rd minute they did increase their lead when a free kick on the left was floated into the area for Lee Coburn on his own 6 yards out and his powerful header hit the back of the net. It could have been worse when in the 66th minute Coburn 40 yards out went through two tackles and ended up in the area but his shot went wide of Gavin and past the post when it seemed he would score. Gavin came to the rescue in the 75th minute when another free kick into the area found Coburn again and Gavin pushed his powerful header onto the bar and the ball came out to Danny Penny but his shot was cleared off the line. The rest of the game saw Lordswood hanging on for the final whistle and now have only Herne Bay to play on the 19th December.
