Kent Premier League Cup Group A

22nd November 2006
Lordswood  1   VCD Athletic  2

Lordswood played their second match in three days against one of the top two teams in the league and can come away a little bit gutted about not gaining a point in tonight’s game.

VCD started off quickly and in the 13th minute they took the lead when Stuart Abbott on the right crossed to the back post where Ashley Probets was and his sweet volley from 15 yards beat Gavin and ended up in the back of the net. They were now in charge of the game but only had a few chances to increase their lead one being in the 37th minute when Probets on the left got to the by-line and his low cross was deflected for a corner by Warren Phillips under pressure. Lordswood first real chance came in the 42nd minute when Andy Forster went on a great run down the right and his cross into the area was met by Mike McKenna’s head and from 15 yards out forced Grant Wallis to push the ball around the post.

VCD came out for the second half like they meant business and in the 49th minute a corner into the middle of the area as deflected to the back post for Terry Barry three yards out but he fired his shot over the bar. Lordswood could and maybe should have equalised in the 60th minute when Mike’s cross was deflected into the path of Gary East who at first missed his kick but the ball luckily ended up at his feet but his shot from 4 yards was saved by the keeper’s legs. Lordswood got their equaliser nine minutes later when Adam Overton’s corner to the backpost was retrieved by Dave Forster who beat the defender and crossed from the by-line to the far post for Ashley Russell to head home from 2 yards for his first of the season. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams trying to win it and in the last five minutes Lordswood had a great chance to win it when a scramble occurred in the penalty area and unfortunately it was cleared and the Andy Forster running forward from halfway cut inside and let fly from 20 yards but the keeper saved it.

The sting in the tail came in the 94th minute when a ball into the area found Richard Sinden who from 7 yards shot past Gavin to the utter amazement of the Lordswood players and Management.
