Kent Premier League
18th November 2006
Whitstable Town 1 Lordswood 1
Lordswood’s last points were a month ago away at Erith and Belvedere but today they should have been the first team to beat unbeaten
Whitstable as they played out of their skins and nearly came away with a victory.
Lordswood came out of the blocks quickly and in the 5th minute a corner was only half cleared and came out to Adam Ling who from an acute
angle saw his shot hit the side netting. Whitstable replied when in the 8th minute a corner to the far post saw Joss Main’s header come back of the crossbar.
Lordswood thought they had scored in the 15th minute when a Mike McKenna free kick from 19 yards curled around the wall forcing Kevin Fewell to parry away
but only to Adam Ling who shot in but was given offside. Another chance came in the 24th minute when Dave Forster won the ball in midfield went forward and
slid the ball into the path of Gary East in the area and his shot across the goal under pressure from the defender was saved. In the 43rd minute Whitstable
thought they could have taken the lead when a ball into the area forced Gavin to punch clear under pressure and the ball ended up at Tommy Martin’s feet 7
yards out and his shot was parried away by Gavin who was fouled by Andy Constable.
The second was the same as the first with both teams going for the win and in the 46th minute Alex Hossick running forward let fly from 28
yards but it went just over the bar something Whitstable would do a lot with their shots. In the 59th minute saw what could have turned out to be the most
decisive moment in the match when first Constable acrobatically saw his goal bound shot deflect off Warren Phillips for a corner and from the resulting
Corner Constable was sent off for deliberate Handball. The question now would Lordswood be able to take control of the match and in the 63rd minute a free
kick to the back post saw Mike McKenna rise and his header was saved by the keeper on the line although a few Lordswood players appealed for a goal.
In the 67th minute Adam Ling foraging down the left wing beat the defender and passed inside to Mike McKenna who controlled it and shot but
it was blocked but in the very next minute Gary East went down the left wing and passed inside to Mike who controlled it and this time shot home from 10
yards to give Lordswood a deserved lead. Whitstable were looking very ragged and Marc Seager decided on a change and he bought on two subs to try and
salvage a draw. In the 73rd minute Whitstable should have scored when the ball pin balled around the six yard area but every shot was blocked and one shot
was cleared off the line was this going to be Lordswood day.
Whitstable by now were throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at Lordswood even though they only had ten men and eventually they did score
with ten minutes to go when Hossick went forward from the half way line passed to Steve Marshall who returned the ball and from 12 yards he thundered the
ball into the back of the net. Whitstable did not sit on their laurels and pushed forward for a winner but the Lordswood defence held on and got a deserved
draw although they will feel disappointed they did not go on and win.
